DIY use garden planters to store kids books and toys and stuffed animals

Living in our little shoe box in the sky in Manhattan, creative space and storage ideas become even more important.  I loved this DIY idea I found from Centsational Girl where you use garden planters as little storage nooks for kids’ books and toys.

How do you store your kids’ books and toys?  I’d love to hear your ideas and suggestions!

Storing upward like that due to little space kind of reminds me of Manhattan and how homes are built upward because of little space…  ~YiShaun

One of the children’s books I wrote that is coming out in November 2011 is the AdoraPet’s Pima Puppy and Pico Puppy’s Astronaut Adventure.  In it, children get a visual treat of watercolor pictures of the Solar System based on NASA images, and they also get to see how the planets compare to each other in size.  I think that is so cool to discover and find out, especially for a young child!

On one of the pages, Pima Puppy, Pico Puppy and the children on the space ship with them have broken out of Earth’s atmosphere and see Earth as a distant planet they just left.  I thought it was a great way to show children what it would look like to actually fly into outer space, and I’m so excited for you and your kids to see the book when it comes out in November, but you can pre-order it now on Amazon.com.

In the meantime, this is a time lapse video of photographs taken from the International Space Station as it orbits Earth at night.  The white flashes in the clouds around 0:20 are lightening flashes!

Last week, I had the pleasure of guest posting on my friend’s blog, RunGiaRun.  Gia had twins last year, and she asked me to do a spread on family lifestyle finds for twins.  Check out her blog for the whole post: Good Things Come In Two’s.

Be sure to bookmark Gia’s blog, RunGiaRun, for all things twins, running, and motherhood in Manhattan…  ~YiShaun

I thought this would be a really fun way to get your kids curious and excited about learning how animals naturally protect themselves from predators. If you want to share some fun stay-at-home time with your kids, ask them to spot all the camouflaged creatures in this animal camouflage video.

Which ones did your kids like the best?

I love simple little science experiments that show kids the amazing properties of water, the effects of physics, and more through everyday household objects.  Steve Spangler shows how water remains suspended in an upside down jar even though there’s no lid on it…  ~YiShaun

I think the Boon Squirt Baby Food Dispensing Spoon is ingenious.  You put the baby food in the handle and squeeze it out for each bite, which is great for on the go feedings.

Can you see yourself using this for your kids?

I would like to thank and give a big hug to The Naptime Chef for this nutella pastry recipe.  How can you possibly go wrong with Nutella encased in a warm pie pastry?  I remember loving Pop Tarts growing up, and this recipe makes them all grown up.  I especially love when you can involve kids in making a dessert recipe, and with this recipe, kids can seal the edges with the tines of a fork, etc.

Do you have any fond childhood memories of Pop Tarts?  What were your favorite flavors?

There is a little dessert place called Dessert Truck Works on the Lower East Side started by a former-attorney-turned-pastry-chef that makes the most amazing Nutella brioche donuts.  They seriously are mind blowing.  I think this nutella dessert recipe will be a good way to tide me over before my next visit to Dessert Truck Works…  ~YiShaun

These dresses from Charabia are so cute and stunning, they look like they’ve been miniaturized straight off the Paris runways.  Get them in the United States at Everything But The Princess…  ~YiShaun

We Belong Together kids bookI just found the cutest children’s books from a children’s book illustrator and author named Joyce Wan.  Her books, We Belong Together and You Are My Cupcake are playfully illustrated little love notes between parent and child.  We Belong Together highlights the bond between parents and children, and You Are My Cupcake features illustrations of food-based nicknames we often give our loved ones.

What nicknames do you have for your kids and spouse?  Isn’t it funny how so many of them are food-based?

As an American, it makes me smile that a French term of endearment is “mon petit chou,” or “my little cabbage”…  ~YiShaun
